Announcements

  • 12/11. Siphon Sketch. This sketch shows the variables that will be provided.
  • 12.7. Final Exam. Ten "problems" each scored on level. If a student got 5 of these at level 5, I will likely give them an A. You don't need to have everything right, know everything, or do every problem to get an A in the course. Part of final exam will be closed book/closed notes. Part will be open book plus six pages of notes. Calculators are in on both parts of the exam. Computers are out except for the siphon problem.
  • 12.7. Time Management on Final. Questions: How can I wham (apply the Wales/Woods model) a problem with only 10 minutes? Answer: Show that you have your fluid mechanics down. (I'll demo in class today).
  • 12/7. Extra Credit. On problem 10.89, I rewarded four students with extra credit for doing great engineering (Level 5). Most student work on this assignment looked quite good.
  • 12/6. Format of Final. Question: will the format be similar to the samples that I have provided. Answer: No, the final will not be restricted to specific types of questions.

The final will involves many forms of questions. I want students to focus on reaching the goals of the course; not on studying for specific types of test problems.

  • 12/5. Today, I'm only available from 1:30 to 2:30. (Meeting was scheduled during my office hour).
  • 12/4. Extra Credit. Four individuals got extra credit for pump assignment. Good job! These scores are posted in BBoard.
  • 12/4. Exam Strategy. Question: On take home problem, can we use TK Solver to run calculations on test day? . Answer: Yes (we are engineers and engineers do what works).
  • 12/3. Internship Opportunity. Mike Hughes, UIME Alumni, has started a company called Next Level Training. Mike's company produces products for training for competition pistol and rifle shooting. Mike is looking for engineering students who might be interested in an internship. You can view the company website at http://nextleveltraining.com/. To apply or learn more, contact Mike by phone (360-284-4202) or by email (moc.gniniartleveltxen|ekim#moc.gniniartleveltxen|ekim). Mike would be great person to learn from and to work with.
  • 12/2. Won't be available in office hours today from 1:00 to 1:45 pm.
  • 11/30. New! Sample application problems have been posted ; click on link on the bottom of the page for Chapter 10
  • 11/28. Info about final is posted. Clicker quiz on Wed. Homework (Wplus) assignment is due Wed.
  • 11/10. My game plan is to restart clicker quizzes on Friday.
  • 11/9. Clicker Battery Issue. If you r batteries drain abnormally quick, go to the campus bookstore to have their clicker “updated” to the newest firmware (it only takes a few minutes).
  • 11/7. On of my engineering buddies is looking a student to work at Lexmark in Kentucky during spring semester (maybe also summer). If anyone is interested, please let me know.
  • 11/5. SWBATs and resources are getting posted.
  • 10/15. Airplane Pitch Stability Explanation. (insanely good!; thanks Justin ….)
  • 10/5. Take Home part of exam #1 is now posted on the assignments page.
  • 9/29. Pressure field/Flow acceleration film.
    • Handout w/ Dr. Elger's notes.
    • Link to the movie.
    • Link to the MIT website (note links to films and handouts)
  • 9/13. WileyPlus Issues.
    • PI symbol will be loaded in the drop down menus of the palette.
    • There is a help icon for student to click on right on the math palette ==> gives tutorials on how to use the system.
    • Exponents ==> use this format ==> 6E12
    • I have had great luck with the WileyPlus Chat Service; thus, I recommend this.
  • 9/8. Re. fluid properties, use sigma = 0.073 N/m for all calcs. In general, if temp is not specified, assume room conditions.
  • 9/8. Time I spend dealing with "changing grades" and dealing with associated issues is time that is not spent on more important matters (like meeting with students, improving the textbook, ….). Thus, if you have grade issues (a point here or there on Wplus or quizzer), please document by sending me an email. If it matters at the end of the semester, then I'll be happy to adjust your scores. Usually these items are a tiny fraction of 1%.
  • 9/8. WileyP had a system crash yesterday afternoon (about 4). Appears that they are back on line. Sorry about this! Know that this can be frustrating.
  • 9/8. Concept problem 1.04.1 has a mistake (2 correct answers).
  • 8/31. Please get registered on WileyPlus. The first WPlus assignment will be made on Friday. It will be due on Wed (after the holiday).
  • 8/31. WileyPlus is fixed. (yea!) Three students lost their registration codes. I have new registration codes for them.
  • 8/29. I have a meeting I need to attend @ 12:30 today (during OHs).
  • 8/29. Blackboard will be used for posting grades. Ignore other stuff on Bboard unless I tell you otherwise.
  • 8/27. WileyPlus Assignment canceled for Monday. Go ahead and work problems 2.5, 2.7, 2.9, and 2.11. Solutions are
    • 2.5) 4.77 kg/m^3, 46.8 N/m^3
    • 2.7) ratio = 1.5
    • 2.9) 178 lbf
    • 2.11) 6.47 kg/m^3, 63.5 N/m^3
  • 8/26. Students are reporting trouble getting on WPlus. I contacted Wiley Tech Support. They suggested this link. If this works, please email me.
  • 8/26. WileyPlus problem is solved. Register here
  • 8/25. I have set up BlackBoard. Please go to the home page, then click on the icon and register your clicker. Clicker scores will be recorded to Blackboard, hopefully starting next week. Note: Blackboard will be used for posting grades and not much else.
  • 8/24. Students cannot sign up for WileyPlus yet. I am working on the technical issues.
  • 8/24. Clickers. Company: Turning Technologies. Product Name: ResponseCard NXT. ISBN: 9781934931455.
  • 8/22. Welcome to the first day of class! Class announcements are posted on the home page.
